Greetings,

Here is a new book for discussion here (click on the book title below for more detail):

Living Long and Loving It: Achieving a Healthy and Active Lifestyle
by Irvin M. Korr and Rene J. McGovern (Paperback - Jan 31, 2008)

Book Description provided by the Publisher (Prometheus Books):

Stereotypes about the elderly are so prevalent that elders themselves often buy into them. People young and old assume that retirement is a time of inactivity, less social involvement, and inevitable physical decline. For over nine decades Dr. Irwin M. Korr was a living refutation of that dreary stereotype. Through a holistic approach to health, based on the principles of osteopathic medicine, he proved that healthy, vigorous, fulfilling old age and long life are the natural culmination of healthy living. In his eighties, Dr. Korr was regularly playing tennis and cross-county skiing, while continuing his career as a medical educator, researcher, author, and lecturer.

In this inspiring guide to achieving a healthy lifestyle at any time of life, Dr. Korr explains with enthusiasm and great clarity how any reader can apply scientifically based osteopathic principles to improve quality of life and promote successful aging. Among the principles he stresses is that the human body incorporates its own healing and defensive systems, as well as a health maintenance system. Together they form an indwelling healthcare system that is the ultimate source of health and for which each individual must take primary responsibility. By learning to develop healthy habits, we take care of the "physician within" to ensure that our inner physician can then take care of us.

Dr. Korr also emphasizes the importance of regular exercise and the beneficial effects that freedom of motion and physical activity bring, not only on our musculoskeletal system but also for our various internal organs, as well as our state of mind. He recommends stretching exercises such as Yoga and whatever workout routine an individual finds enjoyable, from walking to jogging, swimming, and bicycling. Finally, he makes the point that healthy aging is a choice that anyone can make at any time of life by making beneficial lifestyle changes.

About the Author:

Irvin M. Korr, PhD (1909-2004), was widely known and regarded for his writing in the fields of medical education, medical philosophy, and heath promotion. He spent most of his career at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, but also worked at New York University School of Medicine, Michigan State College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the University of Texas School of Osteopathic Medicine. He wrote numerous articles and several books, mostly on the human nervous system and the physiological basis for osteopathic medicine.

Rene J. McGovern, PhD (Kirksville, MO), is a geriatric and health psychologist and professor of neurobehavioral sciences and community and family medicine at A.T. Still University in Kirksville, MO. She is also on the faculty of the department of psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, OH. She has lectured nationally and internationally on geriatrics and behavioral health and headed the federally funded ElderLynk project to integrate mental health in primary care for the elderly. She is the coauthor, with J.J. McGovern, of Your Healer Within: A Unified Field Theory of Healthcare, as well as many articles in peer-reviewed academic journals.

Starting with a quiz---"How Fast Are You Aging?"---Liponis explains the new science, lays out an accessible and proven 7-step program with an 8-day meal plan, and motivates readers to put the program into practice so that they can keep their minds sharp, become more physically fit, be more resistant to infections and disease, and feel and stay younger than they ever imagined. Through the UltraLongevity program, Liponis promises more than a long life; he promises a long, healthy life.

Greetings,

Here is a new book for discussion here:

From Belly Fat to Belly Flat:
How Your Hormones Are Adding Inches to Your Waist and Subtracting Years from Your Life -- the Medically Proven Way to Reset Your Metabolism and Reshape Your Body

by M.D., C.W. Randolph and Genie James (Paperback - Jan 15, 2008)

Book Description provided by the Publisher (HCI):

Discover the hidden culprit behind the 'middle-age spread' -- and the simple plan that's helped hundreds of women over 30 break the fat cycle! I t's an all-too-common problem once you hit thirty: Despite your best efforts, you just can't seem to lose the extra weight around your middle, and you look in the mirror wondering what month and year you lost your waistline. Medical research proves you're not alone -- that the average American gains one to two pounds a year after age thirty -- usually around the stomach. Not only does this excess belly fat make you look and feel bad, it's the most damaging kind of fat; a precursor to heart attacks and certain types of cancer. To the contrary of other diet books, C.W. Randolph, M.D., a champion for women's health, explains that the real reason behind this problem has less to do with calories, carbs, or crunches and everything to do with a little-known but very real medical problem called 'estrogen dominance.' By treating thousands of women safely and effectively for over two decades, Dr. Randolph has discovered why we are in the midst of an estrogen epidemic and how you can save your waistline... and your health... using his 3-step plan comprised of an anti-estrogenic diet, natural progesterone supplementation, and exercise. You'll learn:
-How to self-diagnose estrogen dominance
-The top ten belly-blasting foods that jump-start weight loss and maintain hormone balance
-How your sleep patterns, exercise habits, and stress levels impact your hormone levels
-Which vitamins and supplements support, not sabotage, your overall hormone balance.

The result? Well within four weeks you'll lose pounds and inches' and reveal the flat belly -- and the health and vitality that go along with it.

Greetings,

Here is a new book for discussion here:

The Natural Hormone Makeover:
10 Steps to Rejuvenate Your Health and Rediscover Your Inner Glow

by Phuli Cohan (Hardcover - Jan 14, 2008)

Book Description provided by the Publisher (Wiley):

During both perimenopause and menopause it is estimated that 800f all women suffer significant life altering symptoms such as fatigue, depression, low sex drive, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, recurrent urinary tract or vaginal infections, insomnia, and more. Many large-scale studies have been done looking at the safety of hormones. Unfortunately the largest studies in this country have looked at the safety and benefits of synthetic hormones given orally, primarily using horse estrogen (Premarin) and synthetic progesterone (Provera, or Medroxy progesterone). Medical evidence continues to mount against artificially replacing hormones (HRT), which paves the way for this all-natural approach to hormone rejuvenation.

From the Inside Flap:

"After having experienced various difficult perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms for years, I was helped greatly by Dr. Phuli Cohan's unique approach to treatment, which integrates elements of her training in Western, Chinese, and Ayurvedic medicines."
Nina Simonds, author of A Spoonful of Ginger and Spices of Life

Perimenopause, the five to fifteen years before menopause, is fraught with symptoms that are often ignored, or worse, tolerated. You can't avoid perimenopause or menopause, but you can avoid the suffering, loss of energy, and emotional ups and downs that accompany them. You can also retain your skin and muscle tone, feel as vigorous and healthy as ever, and enjoy an active sex life. And you don't have to risk your long-term health to do it.

In The Natural Hormone Makeover, a female doctor who has spent more than two decades studying the relationship between hormones and menopause presents a safe and effective program for using natural and bioidentical hormones to combat hot flashes, insomnia, mood swings, fatigue, breast pain, hair loss, low sex drive, and many other symptoms linked to menopause-related hormone imbalances.

This easy-to-follow ten-step treatment program educates and empowers you to make the best choices to improve your symptoms and feel healthier, happier, and sexier. Combining traditions of Chinese medicine with the latest Western developments and discoveries, this regimen helps you create a personalized course of treatment using supplements, herbs, natural and bio-identical hormones, and diet to enhance both safety and hormone effectiveness.

You'll learn everything you need to know about:

-- The seven different forms of estrogen and how their "personalities" affect you

-- Bioidentical hormones and why they are safer and more effective than hormone replacement therapy

-- The importance of the adrenal gland in improving symptoms and slowing the aging process

-- Cutting-edge discoveries concerning hormone metabolism, dietary supplements, and safety

-- Altering the effects of lifestyle, environment, and genetics on hormone balance

-- Chinese herbal treatments and why they help you to metabolize your body's own hormones more completely

-- Assembling a team of health professionals to ensure the safety and effectiveness of your hormone makeover

If you've been confused about your health and whether you need or can use hormones safely, you're not alone. Judging by the rash of false claims, misguided warnings, and faulty explanations in recent years, so are many of the so-called experts. The Natural Hormone Makeover gives you clear, authoritative, scientifically proven in-formation you can trust. Read it and start to rediscover your inner glow today.

Key words:
New books, Natural Hormone Makeover, Phuli Cohan, Wiley, perimenopause, menopause, fatigue, depression, low sex drive, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, recurrent urinary tract or vaginal infections, insomnia, Premarin, Provera, Medroxy progesterone, HRT, bioidentical hormones, mood swings, breast pain, hair loss

Greetings,

Here is a new book for discussion here:

The Vitamin D Cure
by James Dowd and Diane Stafford
(Hardcover - Jan 14, 2008)

Book Description provided by the Publisher (Wiley):

Advance praise for The Vitamin D Cure

"The Vitamin D Cure is a revolutionary way to think about health and disease. My daughter suffered from a severe vitamin D deficiency and correcting it made a positive difference in her life. This book is practical and easy to read, and it offers hope for millions of people who suffer from pain, low energy, obesity, or depression."
Daniel Amen, M.D., Director, Amen Clinics, Inc., and author of Making a Good Brain Great and Change Your Brain, Change Your Life

"For decades nutritional scientists assumed that recommended intakes of vitamin D prevented bone disease but offered few other health benefits. In this skillfully written book,Dr. Dowd expertly explains how vitamin D is actually a hormone whose insufficiency represents one of the most widespread health problems in the United States. By following the individualized program of supplementation and sun exposure outlined in this book, the risk for numerous chronic diseases can be reduced."
Loren Cordain, Ph.D., author of The Paleo Diet

"This is a timely and unique book that highlights the importance of vitamin D in the prevention and control of many common conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease. Recent clinical studies have documented the fact that most people are vitamin D deficient and that taking vitamin D supplements can reduce the risk of dying from all diseases. Dr. Dowd's five-step plan provides insight into the wonders of the forgotten vitamin and offers a practical and user-friendly game plan to place us on the road to heart health and a longer life."
Jennifer H. Mieres, M.D., Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of Nuclear Cardiology at the New York University School of Medicine, coauthor of the Heart Smart Guide for Black Women and Latinas

"Vitamin D is truly a miracle vitamin – it is fundamentally important to health and fighting many different diseases. And yet most people don't come close to obtaining optimal amounts. In this book, Dr. James Dowd explains everything you need to know about vitamin D and how it can improve your health."
Jack Challem, author of Stop Prediabetes Now, The Inflammation Syndrome, and The Food-Mood Solution

"It is rare these days to have clear and understandable explanations of medical science. Fortunately, Dr. Dowd has the knowledge and has taken the time to provide some excellent insights into the health advantages available to everyone through natural environmental resources like vitamin D. The writers of this book are to be highly commended and thanked."
Benjamin S. Carson, Sr., M.D., Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery and Professor of Neurological Surgery, Oncology, Plastic Surgery, and Pediatrics, the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions

From the Inside Flap:

It may sound too good to be true, but it's actually solid medicine based on real science: groundbreaking new research has traced the source of a wide array of disorders that afflict up to 200 million Americans to a single common factor - vitamin D deficiency. Increasing the amount of vitamin D in your body can cure or help treat a remarkable number of ailmentsfrom obesity to arthritis, from high blood pressure to back pain, from diabetes to muscle cramps. If you suffer from these or many other chronic health problems, you may wonder whether you are getting enough vitamin D and what to do about it.

In The Vitamin D Cure, leading rheumatologist and researcher Dr. James Dowd reveals the causes of vitamin D deficiency and explains why North Americans are particularly vulnerable to it. He then offers a simple, easy-to-follow five-step program that can eliminate or alleviate a host of seemingly incurable conditions, such as arthritis, in as little as six weeks. Better yet, by staying on the program, you can enjoy robust health and improved fitness for the rest of your life.

Citing numerous scientific studies, a wealth of clinical data, and case stories from his practice, Dr. Dowd shows how lifestyle and diet have combined to reduce the vitamin D intake of most of us who live north of the equator. Eating the wrong foods, not getting enough exercise, and spending too much time indoors have produced a major health crisis.

The good news is that you can greatly improve your health with the five easy steps in this life-changing guide. You'll learn how to:

-- Find out how much vitamin D you need

-- Sun and supplement your way to great D levels

-- Calculate your acid excess and tweak your diet

-- Cover your bases with total supplementation

Add a little exercise to the mix

More than you ever realized, the future of your health is in your hands. You can harness the power of the "sunshine vitamin" to transform your life, end your pain, and return to active, vigorous well-being now and for decades to come. Read The Vitamin D Cure and start letting the sun shine on your health and your life.

Greetings,

Here is a new audio cassette for discussion here:

The Myth of Alzheimer's:
The Story of a Disease, a Doctor, and a New Direction for Aging in the 21st Century

by Whitehouse M.d., Peter J. ph.d, Danny George, and Julie M. Fenster
(Audio Cassette - Jan 8, 2008)

Product Description provided by the Publisher (Blackstone Audio, Inc.):

This is a call to arms to re-evaluate the way we think about and deal with Alzheimer's disease. The author puts forth that the current view of Alzheimer's as a virtual death sentence obscures the potential for vitality and wisdom that still exists in the graying years. He posits that there is a wide range of cognitive impairment and that the trajectory does not necessarily end in the deepest throes of senility, impaired body function, and dependence on twenty-four-hour care. He contends that the label of Alzheimer's generates fear, paranoia, and anxiety, and by taking a closer look at what Alzheimer's is and isn't, he can offer hope to individuals, as well as their families, who suffer from a decline in their cognitive abilities. He presents a new approach to the treatment of brain aging, using examples from his own practice as well as from around the world, and provides practical information so that readers can get the best level of care for themselves or their loved ones.

About the Authors:

PETER J. WHITEHOUSE, M.D., Ph.D., is the director of integrative studies in the Department of Neurology at Case Western Reserve University and is the founding director of the University Memory and Aging Center at Case. He is a clinician at Elder Health Center at University Hospital of Cleveland.

DANNY GEORGE works at the Memory and Aging Center in Cleveland, Ohio, and is currently pursuing a master of science degree in medical anthropology at Oxford University in England.

Freedom is the focus, and there's no better time than now to free yourself from untrue and outdated ideas about your own potential. Naomi is full of fresh ideas to help readers look at their futures in a whole new way. The aging process, as Naomi shows, is an opportunity for new experiences, original routines, and more contentment than ever before.

Naomi offers tips on finding simplicity, streamlining possessions, disengaging from "energy vampires," and discovering the most effective ways to support your life force and boost your energy. Each chapter includes vital new health information and proactive lifestyle suggestions for your body, mind, and spirit. Naomi has a solution-oriented approach to everything from beauty tips to getting in sync hormonally with bioidentical HRT. She also offers wisdom on dealing with grief as well as enlightening ideas on how to recognize and enjoy your own uniqueness no matter how old you are.

Packed with personal anecdotes, commentary from celebrity friends and data from renowned doctors, and plenty of Naomi's own special brand of lemonade-out-of-lemons wit and wisdom, Naomi's Guide to Aging Gratefully encourages readers to believe that it's never too early or too late to enter an important new chapter in their lives and embrace opportunities to become their happiest ever.

Book Description
With medical information doubling every three and a half years, life spans of 110 to 125 years may soon be a reality. This book offers a clear understanding of the biological processes involved in aging, the ten key body systems where decline first begins, and the culprits largely responsible for tipping the clock: vitamin and mineral deficiencies and diminishing hormone levels. Featuring a longevity test that readers can use to identify how old or young they really are, and the personal life-extension programs of more than two dozen anti-aging specialists.
